Banned Books Project

Julie of the Wolves, by Jean Craighead George, published in 1972

the reason this book was banned centered around an awkward unwanted sexual advance. oddly enough the real story is much meaner and bloodier. especially the wanton destruction of wolves and beautiful raw alaska arctic. the other story is the fortitude and resourcefulness of this young girl julie. it's a book for every child but more than that it's a book for every young girl. julie is or should be an icon of a new feminist movement. i chose to focus on that.

Collective Memory Project, Issaquah, WA

this is another project i've been working on this summer. it's called collective memory.
this is the piece i created for it. it's about 5 feet tall and is made of beeswax, metal, paper, cloth, and photographs. it's based on Philip Dungey, a musician, teacher, and a man of faith. i chose one of Philip's favorite moments, when he conducted a youth orchestra -- he told me about wearing a nice tuxedo. i saw the photos. he did look fine! i also had the story of the prodigal son in mind.
